WILLIAM GOES ON HOLIDAY

You will notice that our much-loved miner statue, William, is missing. Poor William has been sat on his bench through sun, wind, rain and frost for years. He is now in need of, and deserves some R&R.

On the 13th December 2019 he was to be taken on a holiday to Wadebridge, so that his creator, sculptor Richard Austin, can refurbish him. The refurbishment has become quite urgent, as he is suffering from many cracks in his body, and another winter is likely to significantly worsen his condition.

A strong team of volunteers from Gunnislake Community Matters lifted his heavy concrete bulk unceremoniously into a trailer and off he went for his makeover.

We will look forward to his return once he is fully refreshed from his holiday.  He will once again sit on his favourite bench near the new marvellous Wheal Talk Ceramic Mural. No doubt the bal maiden and William will have many mining memories to  share. The mural will be officially opened on Saturday 4th January by our County Councillor, Dorothy Kirk, and creator Potter, Rosie Fierek.
